Stay order on VoIP licensing vacated

The high Court yesterday vacated the stay order on granting VoIP licence to internet service providers.

A division bench comprising Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury passed the order discharging the rules issued earlier on two similar public interest litigation (PIL) writ petitions as the petitioners withdrew them from the legal battle.

The court order cleared the way for Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to invite applications for granting VoIP licences.

In September last year, BTRC had invited applications for granting VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) licences to internet service providers. But the process was thwarted following the writ petitions filed by advocate M Moinul Haider Chowdhury, Global Access Ltd, Sirious Broadband Bd Ltd and Daffodil Online Ltd.
