BCL leader Babu was killed by Rab men, not in 'encounter'
Says BIHR report

BCL leader Ahsan Habib Babu was killed not in encounter but by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), according to an investigation report of Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR).

Babu, a leader of Taherpur BCL and third year student of history department of Rajshahi Government College, was killed at Taherpur in Rajshahi on the night of December 1.

Rab claimed that he was killed in an encounter between the Rab members and his accomplices, but local people told the investigation team that no exchange of fire took place in the area at that time.

Many witnesses also claimed that Rab men picked him up from a shop and opened fire on him, said the BIHR report yesterday.

Taskforce Against Torture (TFT), the investigation wing of the BIHR, conducted the probe into the incident. In a news release, it also demanded judicial enquiry into the killing.

Rab also claimed that Babu was an outlawed PBCP member and an accused in seven or eight cases filed with Puthia and Durgapur police stations. But the investigation team found that he was an accused in two murder cases.

Babu's father claimed that the police implicated his son in the two cases with political motive.

According to Rajshahi Awami League President Tajul Islam Md Faruque, Babu's name was included in the two cases one year after the killings of Durgapur ward commissioner Anwar and Puthai Juba Dal leader Pakhi, said the investigation report.

The BIHR also demanded an end to crossfire by Rab and security for Babu's family members.

Earlier, Babu's father Afsar Ali Molla, an AL leader, filed a case with a Rajshahi court against four Rab-5 officials in connection with the killing of his son.
