Ctg, Dhaka smell win

Chittagong and Dhaka brightened their chan-ces to win full points in the fourth round of the Mirzapore Ispahani Tea 8th National Cricket League yesterday but Khulna seemed to settle for four points as their match against Sylhet headed for a draw.

Dhaka took an imposing 234-run lead against hosts Rajshahi with one day remaining at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium while some lusty batting -- Gazi salahuddin's century and Tamim Iqbal's explosive 76 -- helped Chittagong set a daunting 375-run target for Barisal from maximum 98 overs at the Chittagong Divisional Stadium.

Rajshahi V Dhaka
Overnight 150-4, Rajshahi were bundled out for exactly 200 in their first innings as Mosharraf Hossain ripped through the tail taking four wickets on the third day. The left-arm spinner finished with 6-59 as the home side lost their last half of the innings in the space of 17 runs.

Mushfiqur Rahman added just two runs to his overnight 44 but Sohrawardi Shuvo fought a lone battle, scoring second highest 40 after resuming on 23.

Dhaka, expected to show some fireworks in a bid to give an early declaration, crawled to 148-2 in 60 overs in their second innings. Opener Uttam sarkar, who faced 180 balls, was unbeaten at close of play on 73.

Chittagong V Barisal
The Barisal first innings, resuming on 233-8, lasted less than four overs as Saju Datta and Sabbir Khan clipped the tail in addition of five runs. Off-spinner Sabbir ended with 5-86 while Saju claimed 4-46.

With a handsome 75-run first innings lead, the hosts went plundering the rival attack with young left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal smashing 76 off 86 balls with 13 fours and two sixes. However, it was rock-solid Gazi Salahuddin whose 126 off 198 deliveries anchored the Chittagong essay before declaring on 299-8 shortly before close of play.

Salahuddin, who watched Tamim take over charge during the 99-run second wicket stand, hit 16 fours and two sixes.

Skipper Ehsanul Haque was on fire towards the end, cracking 54 off just 48 balls with help of nine sweetly timed boundaries.

Barisal, 13 without loss at stumps, need 362 runs to win.

Sylhet V Khulna
At the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium, Sylhet skipper Rajin Saleh missed a deserved hundred when he was caught by Manjurul Islam off left-arm spinner Manzarul Islam Rana on 92.

Overnight 49, Rajin sent the ball ten times into the fence and hit one six but his efforts were not enough to help Sylhet surpass Khulna's first innings total of 306 as they were all out for 270. Golam Mabud, who resumed on 30, scored 62 during a 110-run partnership with Rajin for the sixth wicket but the fragile tail saw the last three batsmen being dismissed for six runs.

Manzarul, having a fine match, grabbed 3-54 after his first innings century. He was batting on 29 in Khulna's 137-3 in the second innings at stumps.
