A cultural feast for Bangladeshis in Sharjah

It was a memorable evening on November 17 when the Lux Channel i Performance Award (LCPA) '05 was held at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium culminating with a glittering cultural event. More than 40,000 spectators attended the award giving ceremony. It was heartening to see the large turnout of Bangladeshis who came to cheer the cultural group from their country. The prestigious award is given to Bangladeshi artistes in recognition of their excellence in various fields. The event is held outside Bangladesh to serve the dual objectives of promoting Bangladeshi culture abroad and developing a closer relationship with the host country. Artistes entertained the crowd with their dazzling live performances. All the performances were well choreographed and a lot of effort had gone into the sets and costumes. Among the artistes who took part in the programme were: Razzak, Sabina Yasmeen, Syed Abdul Hadi, Momotaj, Azam Khan, Subir Nandi, Ayub Bachchu, Kumar Bishwajit, Ferdous Wahid, Riaz, Purnima, SI Tutul, Tania Ahmed, Salauddin Lavlu, Ishita, Tisha, Srabonti, Kusum Sikder, Mir Sabbir, Monalisa, Hyder Hossain, Monalisa, Mehrin and others. Amongst the distinguished dignitaries present were Motiur Rahman Chowdhury, chief editor of Daily Manabzamin who was the chairman of jury board of LCPA '05; Faridur Reza Sagar, managing director of Channel i and Impress Telefilm Limited, Rezanur Rahman, editor of Anando Alo, the Bangladeshi ambassador in UAE and others. The event kicked off with a spirited performance by a group of artistes consisting of 10 dhulis (dhol players). The award for the Best Playback (female) went to Sabina Yasmin for the film Char Shotiner Ghor. Eminent singer Subir Nandi won the Best Playback (male) award for a song from the same film. Salauddin Lavlu received the Best Director Award for Molla Barir Bou. Mostafa Sarwar Farooki received the award for Best Director (TV play) for his popular serial 69 and Shaikh Shiraj received the award for the Best TV programme for Hridoye Mati O Manush. The last two awards were handed over by Syed Fahim Munaim, managing editor of The Daily Star. The award for Best Model (male) went to Nobel and Best Model (female) to Monalisa. Ferdous won the award for Best Actor and the award for Best Actress went to Moushumi. Popular singer Ferdous Wahid performed his '70s hit Emon ekta ma de na. TV actor Mahfuz and model Monalisa performed a skit at the event. Film actor Manna performed a dance number along with a song composed by James for his new film. Veteran film actor Razzak and actress Rozina showed off their dancing skills along with the popular song titled Babare re baba koi dila bia. Zillur Rahman (of Tritiyo Matra fame) along with actors ATM Shamsuzzaman and Sachchu performed a skit. Nokul Kumar Bishwas took the stage -- arriving on a camel -- and performed a song which won much applause. Kumar Bishwajit performed a delightful medley of his hits. The five-hour event wrapped up with a rendition of a popular film song, Khaerun lo, by eminent folk singer Momotaj. Noted actor Afzal Hossain anchored the event.
