Terming President and Chief Adviser Iajuddin Ahmed's announcement last night of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MA Aziz's going on leave "victory of the people's movement", the Awami League (AL) led 14-party alliance said it will observe its blockade programme as a "victory festival" today."We will declare the next course of programmes after discussing it with like-minded parties and within the 14-party alliance today," 14-party Coordinator Abdul Jalil said emerging from an emergency meeting with AL President Sheikh Hasina at her Sudha Sadan residence last night. Sources said the 14-party will sit in the morning today to withdraw its ongoing blockade across the country before observing its victory celebration. After a meeting with Iajuddin last night, Jalil rushed to Sudha Sadan to discuss the president's midnight address to the nation. Terming President and Chief Adviser Iajuddin's address "ambiguous, mysterious and obscure", Jalil said the president's claim to have reformed the administration and created an atmosphere for a free and fair election is not logical and objective. "In the name of reshuffle, he [president] has kept the same controversial administration designed by Khaleda Zia," Jalil said, alleging that still there are controversial persons in the EC under whose supervision a free and fair election is not possible. "The demand for reconstitution of the Election Commission is the demand of the people. The present EC cannot be a complete one without reconstitution, he said adding that the EC is yet to be reconstituted. "The president's announcement is not enough for a free and fair election. So, we are reiterating our demand for reconstitution of the Election Commission," Jalil said, adding that the 14-party alliance's movements will continue. Emerging from the Bangabhaban, Jalil told reporters that he asked the president/CA to the caretaker government to remove Election Commissioner SM Zakaria and other controversial commissioners from the Election Commission (EC) for the sake of a neutral election. He also demanded that the president should appoint neutral persons to the EC. No controversial person will be acceptable, he told reporters after meeting President Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban. Jalil, also the general secretary of Awami League, AL leader Asaduzzaman Noor and Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Rokanuddin Mahmud met the president at 9:50pm. The meeting continued till 11:05pm. Terming Chief Election Commissioner MA Aziz's going on leave as 'a victory of people', Jalil said 'controversial' commissioner SM Zakaria and other officials are still there. "Such half-done step is not acceptable," he told reporters. Jalil said the caretaker government must remove the 300 upazila based election officers appointed on political considerations by the immediate past BNP-Jamaat government. "We have heard that the president has taken a decision to appoint two more election commissioners without consulting the advisers which is again a violation to the constitution," he said. "The appointments [of two commissioners] have to be made after consulting the advisers. The four advisers who earlier had talks with political parties regarding reconstitution of the Election Commission can give him suggestions regarding the fresh appointment and Election Commission reconstitution after holding discussions with the political parties," Jalil added.
