The 12th International Anti-Corruption Conference has ended in Guatemala City with a call for a broader participation of citizens and youths in anti-corruption movement, says a press release.

This year the slogan of the conference was " Show respect for law."

The four-day conference which ended on Saturday last was participated by more than 1000 representatives from 100 countries across the world.

Trusty Board Chairman of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Prof Muzaffer Ahmad and its Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman also attended the conference which discussed line of action to fight corruption.

The participants said free flow of information is a must for ensuring transparency, accountability and good governance.

Right to governmental information through introducing effective laws, free media and free flow of information on Internet can ensure transparency, they added.

The participants also set some programmes for separate workshops and sessions where strengthening of monitoring system so that the countries that signed the UN anti-corruption agreement can implement it properly, taking initiatives to increase mass awareness about the inter-relation between corruption and human rights and inclusion of youths in anti-corruption movement were highlighted.

At the inaugural session of the conference, the Integrity Award of Transparency International 2006 was given to Dr Anna Sessilia Magellan Cortez of Peru for his courageous role as anti-corruption worker.

The conference urged Chile to handover the former president of Peru Alberto Fujimori to Peru authorities.

There are allegations of corruption and violation of human rights against Fujimori in Peru. He is now living in Chile.

Conference Chairman Justice Barry O'Keefe said Chile should obey the request immediately, otherwise the international accountability will be under question.
