A BNP activist was shot dead and four others including a Jubo League ward unit leader were wounded in separate incidents in the city last night.

Mohammad Rubel, 30, a member of ward-47 unit BNP, suffered serious injuries when three criminals spayed bullets on him near his house in Rayerbazar at around 8:00pm.

He was first rushed to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, but as his condition worsened he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors on duty declared him dead.

Mohammadpur police and the victim's relatives could not identify the reason behind the killing immediately.

In another incident Manik Pradhan, 35, general secretary of ward-89 unit Jubo League, was injured when unidentified criminals chopped him at around 8:30pm.

The injured, now undergoing treatment at the DMCH, told reporters that three criminals waylaid him at Dayaganj when he was returning to his Jurain house from the Awami League central office and chopped him. The attackers also took away Tk 2,500 and his mobile set leaving him critically injured.

Besides, muggers shot and injured vegetable trader Kajol, 35, at Satrasta intersection in Tejgaon and snatched his cellphone at around 9:30pm.

A construction materials trader Rajib Ahmed, 35, received bullet wounds as a gang shot him thrice at Kalyanpur Natun Bazar in Mirpur at about 10:00pm.

Family members suspected that some local extortionists who have been demanding tolls from him might be behind the attack.

At Dhanmondi, a customer shot Jahid Hossain, 32, staff of a mobile recharging shop, at around 6:00pm, following an altercation with him.

All injured were being treated at the DMCH in critical condition.
