Ex-secretary Shahidul Islam joins BNP

Khandaker Shahidul Islam, former secretary to the office of the immediate-past prime minister, joined the BNP yesterday.

The caretaker government had recently cancelled his contractual appointment.

The former bureaucrat, during his service at Prime Minister's Office (PMO), allegedly played a controversial role in his area by taking part in political activities. A group of BNP leaders in Jhenaidah district strongly protested his activities several times.

Shahidul Islam joined the BNP by presenting a bouquet to the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, at a programme in front of the party's central office at Naya Paltan in the city.

Welcoming the former secretary, BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said his joining would make the party stronger and help the party uphold democracy and advance development activities in the country.

He also hoped that every party member would welcome Shahidul Islam warmly.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahidul Islam said that his only goal is to serve the nation and the people and that he will work for the party sincerely.

BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Vice-Chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Aminul Haque and Aman Ullah Aman were also present.
