Promising endeavours at Drik
Fayza Haq
To mark its 18th anniversary, Drik is holding an exhibition of photographs taken by the students of Pathshala. The pictures in Nana Ranger Din Guli are both black and white and coloured and have been framed in simple wooden frames. In the collection is a dramatic portrait in black and white of poet Shamsur Rahman at work in his library. Din Mohammed Shibli, the photographer, had taken pictures of noted personalities of Bangladesh from unusual angles and this was one taken from that series, which had been exhibited once before at Drik as a solo endeavour. MNI Chowdhury's picture, who worked in Afghanistan is also moving. It depicts a man taking his wife to the hospital along with his child. Taking a woman to the hospital was a no-no some time back when the Talibans dominated over the area, where the Buddhist statues had been destroyed, and this was a breakthrough step taken by the husband. The photo is a picturesque one, with the wife in heavy veil, with her colourful apparel peeping out through the veil. She sits astride a white donkey, followed by her man and child, travelling for over three hours. Hills and clouds have been brought in the backdrop. A photo taken by Sajjad Ibne Sayeed depicted the lives of fishermen in Kuakata. Sayeed tries to depict how generations have been involved in the task of fishing. A boat is shown being pushed by a cart, to be carried away for repairs, while others fish in the backdrop. The water appears golden while the clouds are mauve and the scintillating reflection on the water is grayish. Another picture of a little girl in Cox's Bazaar shows her carrying the day's necessities like rice and oil and blithely vending her way home to her family. This delightful picture of the beauty of the simplicity of village life is taken by Tajnoor Trisha. In the background are the wide seashore and waving palm trees. Another interesting moment captured through the lens is that of two boys from the Madrassa in caps and salwar kurta, greatly enjoying a comic book, which is not normally accessible to them. This picture is taken by Hasnat Ahmed Sumon. Also unusual is the depiction of the preparation of rice by boiling it on large cauldrons, shown in brown, gray and black. The picture of the Rakhain festival of water, Shangrai, also depicts the joyous moments of life. Young men go from one neighbourhood to another, splashing water on the young women. The splashed water appears like silver specks on the photo. The tradition of the kabiraj is brought in a picture where a woman is trying to exorcise a child who has jaundice. In another picture taken by Khaled Hassan a gypsy woman is seen playing with her child where the little one is balanced on one hand. Ahmed Tanwir took a picture of children playing on St Martin's island, and this shows one of the players on crutches. Depicting different aspects of life, the young photographers at Drik had done a commendable job.
