Deep-sea Port
Japanese experts in Mongla for study


A 13-member team including eight Japanese experts arrived at Mongla today to study the feasibility of establishing a deep-sea port at Akram point.

During their four-day stay at Mongla, members of the team will meet with the port authority and later visit the site for the feasibility study.

Akram point is 68 kilometres away from Mongla port and 62 kilometres from the shore into the Bay of Bengal.

State Minister for Shipping Maj (Retd) Kamrul Islam also arrived at Mongla today and visited the Mongla channel. He will hold a meeting with leaders of Mongla Dock Workers' union, C&F agents Association, Stevedores' Association, Khulna chamber of Commerce and Industry and Greater Khulna Development Coordination Action Committee this evening at the port auditorium.

Meanwhile, Lawmaker Nurul Islam faction of Khulna BNP today submitted a memorandum to the state minister for shipping demanding a deep-sea port at Akram point.
