Door still open for talks on reforms
Says Bhuiyan

BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday said the government offer for discussion on reform proposals is still there and talks can be held any time if the opposition comes along.

"The door is open for discussion…the proposal for dialogue is still there. If the opposition comes along, dialogue can be held any time," he told reporters at his Secretariat office.

Bhuiyan, also the LGRD minister, reiterated his call for the opposition to sit across the table, giving up their agitation programme.

About the opposition's Election Commission siege programme, he said the opposition could not do anything tangible despite waging an anti-government movement and they would not be able to do so in the future.

"The opposition does not have any connection with people… People in the past did not take part in their programmes," the BNP secretary general said, adding, "People will not support their programmes in the future too because their programmes are not for the people." Asked how there could be a dialogue on the reform proposals when the prime minister has been saying that the next elections will be held as per the constitution, he said speeches at rallies and proposals for discussions are not the same. 'The prime minister had made the offer in parliament…There will be no problem in discussing the reform proposals."About Justice KM Hasan who is set to be the chief of the next caretaker government, Bhuiyan said the constitution has clearly mentioned it how the chief of the caretaker government will be appointed. "This is not a matter of any individual, it's matter of a judge. If anyone does not have confidence in a judge, then she/he does not have the confidence in the judicial system." Replying to a query about the alternatives to KM Hasan in the constitution, the BNP secretary general questioned why the alternatives will be considered when the first person is available there.
