At least 30 people were injured, four of them seriously, in a pitched battle between police and agitated jute mill workers in Khalishpur and Daulatpur industrial areas of the city yesterday evening.

Bangladesh Rifles and Rapid Action Battalion were called after police failed to bring the situation under control.

Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam of Khalishpur Police Station, seven police constables, daily Prothom Alo staff photographer Kamrul Ahsan and convener of Patkal Sangram Parishad Sarder Motaharuddin are among the injured.

Several thousand jute mill workers and employees brought out a protest procession in the evening, witnesses said, adding that the angry demonstrators attacked Kashipur police box at around 7:30pm.

Police lobbed teargas shells and shot several rounds in the air while four bombs were exploded as the clashes spread to different places of Khalishpur and Daulatpur.

Around 40 roadside shops and several vehicles including passenger buses were damaged during the clashes that continued as of filing this report.

Transport services on Khulna-Jessore route stopped and shops and business establishments at Khalishpur and Daulatpur closed.
