Death threat to Prof Jafar Iqbal condemned

Different political parties and human rights organisations yesterday condemned the threat to kill Prof Muhammad Jafar Iqbal and other progressive teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Expressing grave concern over the threat issued by Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, they urged the government to ensure the security of the teachers immediately.

Unb adds: Awami League (AL) General Secretary Abdul Jalil has expressed deep concern over the "death threats" issued against renowned writer Prof Muhammad Jafar Iqbal and nine others.

In a statement yesterday, Jalil alleged that the Jamaat-Shibir network not only issued death threats against progressive writers and intellectuals of the country, but has also killed a number of them.

"As the evil fundamentalist force is sheltered by the alliance government, they have escaped after issuing repeated threats and even after killing intellectuals" he said and called upon people from all walks of life to be united against the 'evil force'.

The AL leader demanded immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment to the "identified Jamaat-Shibir cadres who have been issuing threats against the teachers" as well as ensuring security of the teachers.

Our Staff Correspondent reports: Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Monjurul Ahsan Khan and General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim in a joint statement demanded exemplary punishment of the people involved in the incident.

They also urged the country people to be united against anti-liberation war entities.

In another statement, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) strongly condemned the incident by terming it illegal and criminal.

They also said the incident shocked the whole nation and in a democratic country it is not tolerable at all.

They demanded proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment to the people involved.
