Amendment to water-body policy 2005 demanded

A four-member team of Bangladesh Khudra Matshajibi Samity, a platform of fishermen, yesterday submitted memorandums to the deputy minister for land and the director general of Fisheries Department to press their five-point demand, including amendment to water-body policy 2005 and incorporation of fishermen into the wetland management.Their demands also included participation of fishermen in the leasing process of the country's water-bodies, implementation of all projects submitted by the Samity and allocation of khas land for setting up of matsha-palli (fishing villages). Terming the water-body policy 2005 a document for the extinction of fishermen community, the Samity General Secretary Anwar Hossain Sikdar said that it has opened up opportunities for some NGOs and other vested quarters for money making. Describing the sufferings of the fishermen, he also said that implementation of the current policy cannot change the lot of the fishermen. They also held a rally at Muktangan in the city where Samity President Md Israil Pandit, Organising Secretary Hasinur Rahman, Vice President Abdus Samad, Treasurer Manik Lal Dhar and other leaders were present.
