The World Cup 2006 may have ended two days ago but it still has its effect on life. People are still talking about Italy's triumphant run, Zinedine Zidane's painful last bow from the game in a most dramatic fashion. However, for one Md. Liton of Mirpur, the World Cup has brought more joy because he would be able to watch the biggest show on earth next time on bigger screen. Owner of a 21-inch television, the 39-year-old Liton who has an auto parts shop in old Dhaka, has won the first prize of the Bumper Round of The Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz competition -- a beautiful 27-inch Toshiba LCD TV. Liton became the luckiest among all the winners when Dhaka Mayor Sadeq Hossain picked his coupon amidst roars from a packed audience at the Jatiya Press Club auditorium Tuesday afternoon in the colourful draw ceremony of the Bumper Round which was also graced by footballers of the past and present. Speaking on the occasion the Dhaka mayor, who is also a devoted sports organiser, said that football remains the most popular game in the country and the World Cup brings the best out of the fans. Responding to calls from the audience that he should play a bigger role in improving Bangladesh's football standard so that the millions of fans now supporting other teams could hoist their own flag in 20 years time. But Sadeq Hossain, chief guest for the occasion, while playing down the ambitious appeal said that we should ensure the basics first. "This is the situation in the whole sub-continent. Only federation officials, the players or clubs are not enough to raise the standard. It's very worrying that we do not have enough grounds and it is one of the main reasons we can't produce players," said the mayor. "In other districts, the scene is even worse. They can't event organise tournaments like the past. Still we have to think positive and have to take long-term plans so that our country can try reaching the World Cup in 15-20 years," he added. Mahfuz Anam, the Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star, picked the issue of playing fields from the mayor. "I'm ready to rally behind you to save the playgrounds from turning them into community centres or shopping complexes. If needed, I will go to all the other newspaper editors and build a consensus on the issue like we did to "Save the River Buriganga". "It's pity to see the pieces of grounds, where we would like to see children playing, are vanishing quickly," lamented Anam. Rumee Hossain, the managing director of sponsors Rangs Industries Limited, said that his organisation was proud to be a part of the football madness that gripped the country throughout the past month. "Like any country who participated in the World Cup, Bangladesh has the same passion for the game. We are proud because Toshiba is also a sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2006 itself and what makes me even more proud is that Rangs was involved in the first live telecast of World Cup in Bangladesh in 1982," he said. Bangladesh Football Federation president SA Sultan, general secretary Anwarul Hoque Helal, former national footballers Sheikh Mohammad Aslam and Kaiser Hamid also spoke on the occasion. Former national footballer and national coach Golam Sarwar Tipu, national booters Alfaz Ahmed, Hassan Al Mamun and Aminul Haque attended the draw. BUMPER WINNERS FIRST PRIZE Md.
