Om Prakash, 2 others jailed for 4 years

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced alleged Hundi trader Om Prakash Chowdhury and two others to four years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined them $80,000 each for embezzlement of Tk 41 lakh.

The convicts are Radha Krishna Sharma, managing director of Hong Kong based company Kores Traders Limited, its director Om Prakash Chowdhury and Hare Krishna Saha, director of HB Apparels Limited.

Judge Mohammad Monzurul Bachhid of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order in their absence.

The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender.

In addition, $76,272 seized from their account at One Bank Limited, were confiscated in favour of the state, the judge said.

Earlier, the court recorded statements of five prosecution witnesses during the trial that began on March 14 this year.

According to the prosecution, the accused took the money as loans from One Bank Limited against export orders from Kores Traders for shipping apparel.

An official of the now defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption (Bac) filed the case with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, accusing them of embezzling the money.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Shahidul Islam Sarder appeared for the state.
