Top outlaw in Pabna killed in 'shootout'

A leader of outlawed Purabo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddho) was killed during a "shootout" between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members at Chaitrahati in Ataikula upazila early yesterday.The dead, Ishaq Khan, 42, was an accused in 10 cases including six for murder. Acting on a tip-off, Rab-12 members arrested Ishaq, 42, at Sreekal village in the upazila on Thursday night. On his statement, the Rab men took him to Chaitrahati at about 3:30am to recover hidden firearms and arrest his accomplices. Sensing the presence of the Rab men, Ishaq's accomplices opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate. According to a Rab press release, Ishaq received bullets during the "shootout" that continued for 20 minutes, while his cohorts managed to flee. He was taken to Pabna General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, the press release said. Rab recovered two firearms and three bullets from the spot.
