Saifur tells JS of 'militant' accounts with Islami Bank

Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman told parliament yesterday that some suspected militants' accounts with the Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited have been detected."An investigation is going on to unearth whether transactions under those accounts were made for militant activities," Saifur said replying to a query of lawmaker GM Quader of Jatiya Party (Ershad). He said that all banks have been directed to report to the central bank immediately if any suspected transaction is identified. Replying to Jamaat lawmaker Mia Golam Parwar, the finance minister told the House that till March 31 this year, there have been 1,779 defaulters with over Tk one crore loan each. The total amount of present loan default was about Tk 20,717 crore till the end of March this year while the figure was Tk 24,106 crore when the present government took office, Saifur said. "The government has taken various steps to realise the default loan," he added. In reply to another question, the minister informed the House that a total of Tk 29,388 crore of revenue has been realised till May during the current fiscal year against the target of Tk 34,456 crore. Saifur also mentioned that per capita income during the current fiscal is $482 while it was $343 in the fiscal 1995-96.
