Take a vow to strengthen national unity
PM tells Poet Nazrul birth anniversary function

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday urged all to take a vow to further strengthen national unity through spreading poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's ideals in all spheres of society and culture.

The Prime Minister said this while she was inaugurating a two-day national celebration of the anniversary of birth of the national poet on the Nazrul Academy premises.

"Our respect to immoral poet Kazi Nazrul Islam will be properly shown if we can materialise his dreams of harmony and coexistence placing humanity above all else," she said.

She said he (Kazi Nazrul Islam) would "live forever amongst us" through his creations. "Nazrul's songs and poem inspire us in happiness and sorrow, give us courage and keep our mind peaceful."

During the War of Liberation, his songs and poems were the source of inspirations, she noted.

"We want to make our future generations more attentive to practice of Nazrul works," Khaleda told the function, adding, "We firmly believe if they are encouraged by the ideals of Nazrul, the foundation of Bangladesh's independence, development and prosperity will be strengthened".

The great humanist poet left numerous examples of his love towards Bangladesh through his uncountable creations. Nazrul created a new phenomenon in Bengali literature, she said.

"Nazrul is the only poet who was imprisoned for openly speaking for oppressed people and put up with the cruel torture by imperialist power," Khaleda told her audience.

Khaleda said in the stormy and rough world his messages of humanity still echoes the words of a divine, innocent and beautiful life.

Education Minister Dr Osman Farruk, National University Vice-chancellor Wakil Ahmed and Nazrul Institute Executive Director Poet Abdul Hai Sikdar also addressed the inaugural function.

Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the newly built Jaitya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University at Namapara Battala in Trishal. The Prime Minister laid foundation stone of the university last year.
