Power-starved people hem in PDB offices

Several hundred electricity-starved people yesterday laid siege to the regional head office of Power Development Board (PDB) in the city demanding uninterrupted supply of power.The protesters placed a huge symbolic lock at the main gate of the Bidyut Bhaban in Agrabad during the programme organised by Consumers' Rights Protection Committee (CRPC). The power-starved people gathered in front of the Singapore-Bangkok Market and then marched towards the PDB office in a procession at around 10:45am. As the police intercepted the procession at the main gate of the Bidyut Bhaban, the protesters staged demonstration in front of the building for over an hour. Agrabad and adjoining areas witnessed huge traffic congestion during the programme as the protesters blocked Sheikh Mujib Road, the main road of Agrabad commercial area. The agitating people held a rally there and alleged that the authorities have miserably failed to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity in the city and elsewhere. They threatened to lay siege to the National Grid Station in Chittagong if the situation did not improve. CRPC Chairman Khorshed Alam Sujan, Shahriar Khaled, Delwar Mazumder, Nurjahan Khan, Momtaj Uddin, Tareq Solaiman Selim, Jalal Uddin Iqbal, Nazrul Islam Bahadur, Hazi Mohammad Zakaria and Pulak Khastagir, among others, addressed the rally. KHULNA The activists of Jubo Sangram Parishad yesterday laid siege to Khulna Power House and Daulatpur and Phultala PDB offices to protest against frequent power outages. All officials and employees of the PDB offices remained confined during the two-hour programme that started simultaneously at 11:00am. In separate rallies held in these three places the speakers warned the government of a tough movement if it failed to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
