Death traps on a road

The Brahmanbaria-Lalpur road has turned into a death trap as it is unfit for vehicular movement.

The 15 kilometre road in the sadar upazila is the only link for over for five lakh people of 10 unions of Lalpur to go to the district headquarters.

The road is rugged, dotted with numerous cracks, holes and ditches, caused by the flood. The brick-soling has been washed away.

There are 10 RCC bridges on the road. Five of them are unfit use by vehicles as earth has been washed away from both sides.

When contacted, Atraur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED), said the work for repair of the road has been handed over to the Roads and Highways (R&H) department after Prime Minister Khaleda Zia during her visit to the district in February promised for its reconstruction. LGED can not reconstruct such a road which will involve a huge amount, he said.

Other sources however said a budget of Tk 4.5 crore has been prepared and tender floated for its reconstruction. The work may start as soon as work order is given, they said.
