Roy rescues Bayern
Afp, Berlin
Roy Makaay gave Netherlands national coach Marco van Basten a timely reminder of his striking talents ahead of the World Cup by scoring twice in Bayern Munich's 2-2 draw with lowly Mainz 05 on Sunday.Bundesliga champions Bayern came from two goals down to salvage a share of the spoils and now require just five points to collect a 20th domestic title. Mainz had stormed into a two-goal lead after just 13 minutes after Egyptian international Mohamed Zidan scored a terrific goal and Manuel Friedrich then headed in a corner seven minutes later. Bayern were shell-shocked, but Makaay pulled one back with a clinical strike in the 29th minute and levelled the score with a cool penalty on 37 minutes. Makaay was disappointed to be left out of van Basten's 33-strong pre-World Cup squad on Friday so it was the perfect answer as he took his season's tally to 16 goals. "I am not thinking of the World Cup at the moment I just want to win titles with Bayern," said Makaay. "I was not in the squad so it is going to be difficult and I may not be going to the finals." Makaay and his Bayern teammates will view a draw with Mainz, fourth from bottom of the table, as a missed opportunity to close in on the title. Second-placed SV Hamburg had suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern could have gone seven points clear with a win over Mainz but the gap is raised to five points. Werder Bremen, lying third, also failed to capitalise on Hamburg's rare slip following a scoreless home draw with Schalke 04 on Sunday. Bremen could have moved to within two points of Hamburg but are four points behind in their bid to steal the second automatic qualification spot for the Champions League. Schalke stay six points behind Bremen in fourth as their hopes of netting one of the three Champions League spots continue to fade. Down at the bottom five teams look to be involved in a relegation battle that is set to go down to the wire. MSV Duisburg prop up the table with 23 points from FC Cologne who are on 27 points with Kaiserslautern occupying the final relegation spot on 30 points. After a draw with Bayern, Mainz are one point ahead of Kaiserslautern with VfL Wolfsburg two points better off.
