Five drown as boat capsizes in Jamuna


Five people, four of a family, drowned and two remained missing as an engine boat with 30 passengers aboard capsized in the Jamuna near Kodaldhoa of Ismapur upazila yesterday.

The bodies recovered by the divers are of Nayan, 30, his wife Shirin, 22, son Sharif, 6, and his mother Halima, 65,and another passenger Chandra, 75.

Two passengers went missing, while the remaining 23 swam ashore or were rescued by other boatmen.

Survivors said the boat left Gukhail Bazar ghat of Jamalpur for Sariakandi of Bogra district at about 10:00am. The boat was caught in a violent storm shortly after it sailed from the ghat and sank in the river, they added.

The deputy commissioner of Jamalpur visited the spot.
