Shanta sues 28 cops for assault

A woman, victim of the police brutality during the 14-party opposition's Election Commission besiege programme on March 12, filed a criminal case against 28 policemen including two Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioners (DC).

Complainant Shahin Sultana Shanta, daughter of Justice Shamsul Huda Manik and wife of Supreme Court lawyer Atiur Rahman, filed the case with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka for assaulting her physically and mentally.

The accused are DC (South) Mazharul Huq, DC (West) Kohinur Miah, Constable Ruhul Amin and 25 other unknown policemen.

Hearing the case, Metropolitan Magistrate AJM Abdullahel Baqui recorded the statement of the complainant and directed the inspector general of police (IGP) to appoint an investigating officer for probing the matter. He also ordered to submit the report on the development of investigation by April 16.

In her complaint, Shanta said the police assaulted and dragged her out of a clinic where she took shelter during chaos between the police and opposition activists in front of the Rapa Plaza in the city's Dhanmondi area while she was going to pick her son from school.

On orders from Mazharul Huq and Kohinur Miah, a group of policemen beat her up mercilessly, she alleged.

She also complained that the accused snatched away gold ornaments worth about Tk 75,000, a mobile telephone set, a wristwatch and Tk 14,000 in cash from her possession.

Shanta referred to the "medieval barbarism" of the police reported and broadcast on different national dailies and electronic media.

After filing of the case, the complainant along with her husband at a press conference at the office of the Court Reporters' Association, Dhaka demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits.

Advocates Sahara Khatun, Nuruzzaman Nani, Abdul Baten, Mohammad Hanif, Abdullah Abu and Abdur Rahman Howlader moved the case on behalf of the complainant.
