Euro standard rules to better air quality introduced
Unb, Dhaka
The government has introduced emission rules for vehicles in Bangladesh as per European standards and adopted a road map to improve the air purity of the capital and other cities. The newly introduced emission norms, 'Bangladesh-I and II', will come into effect "immediately and will be applicable irrespective of imported new and reconditioned, in-use and locally produced vehicles running on petrol, diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG)," said an official announcement yesterday. To this effect, necessary amendments have been made to the relevant schedules of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Rules 1997 pertaining to motor-vehicle emission that predominately contributes to cities' air pollution. The road map coming with amendment spells out permissible emission limit and timeframes applicable for diesel and other vehicles registered before and after September 2004.
