RU Teacher Killing
Mohiuddin confesses to involvement
Names Shibir leader as his accomplice, say police

Rajshahi University teacher Mia Muhammad Mohiuddin yesterday confessed to his involvement in the killing of Prof S Taher Ahmed and named RU unit Islami Chhatra Shibir President Shalehi as his accomplice, police said.

The police started a hunt for Shalehi after the arrested teacher's confession during interrogation.

Police sources said several teams of detective and special branches of police are trying to trap Shalehi. The police are ready to pay up to Tk 30,000 for information leading to his arrest, they added.

Jahangir and Nazmul, two arrested suspects, have in their confessional statements before a magistrate also named Mohiuddin and Shalehi as the masterminds of the killing.

The absconding Shibir leader, heavily guarded by cadres, showed up during a huge showdown in Shaheb Bazar on February 10 and went into hiding again.

Top Jamaat-Shibir leaders the same day held a rally attended by Shalehi and threatened police and journalists with dire consequences for doing or writing anything against him.

A huge number of police were on hand in and around the rally, but no-one of them moved to arrest Shalehi.

City unit Jamaat President Ataur Rahman, Central Shibir President Shafikul Islam Masud, RU Shibir Secretary Noor Muhammad, among others, addressed the rally chaired by city unit Jamaat Secretary Rokon Uddin.

Shalehi in a brief speech denied the charge against him and disappeared by a motorcycle as the rally ended.

CAMPUS MOVEMENT
Over 1,000 RU teachers, officials and students formed a human chain on both sides of the road from Juberi Bhaban to RU main gate, demanding immediate arrest of Taher's killers.

They paraded in a silent procession, all gagged with black cloths, in protest against the killing of the teacher, reports our RU correspondent.

Campus sources said RU unit Shibir postponed its day's programme witnessing the huge movement by general students and teachers.

Meanwhile, former vice-presidents and general secretaries of Rajshahi University Central Students Union (Rucsu) start protest movement including hunger strike and rally from February 16.

In a joint statement on February 10, eight VPs and seven GSs termed Shibir a militant outfit and demanded proper investigations into the murders of Prof Muhammad Yunus and Prof Taher.

The Rucsu leaders include Prof Abu Sayeed, Fazle Hossain Badsha, Abdur Razzak, Sardar Amjad Hossain, Nurul Islam Thandu and Ruhul Kuddus Babu.
