1 killed, 20 hurt in blasts at Kirtan

Two bombs were thrown at a congregation of Kirtan-- Hindu devotional songs--killing one and injuring at least 20 in Gangni upazila of Meherpur last night following an alleged argument between some local Muslims and kirtan-goers.

The home-made bombs were thrown at around 10:25pm when the Kirtan was at its peak on the second day of the programme.

Locals said an argument broke out outside the local mosque earlier yesterday as some Muslim residents complained that the kirtan was disturbing the peace of the area.

Police did not make any comment on the bomb blasts.

The border-area of Meherpur has a large Hindu population while it is also infamous as a stronghold of the outlawed Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
