Bangladeshi photographers awarded


Photography is a strong medium with a universal appeal. This visual language crosses cultures, political divisions and time. Photographs can be understood by anyone, regardless of verbal literacy.

Winners of the competition, titled The 66th International Photographic Salon of Japan, one of the world's largest and most prestigious photojournalism contests, were announced on January 1, 2006.

A total of 130 photographs were awarded gold medals in the event, in which 8,012 works from 39 countries competed. Two Bangladeshi photojournalists Shahadat Parvez and Monirul Alam of Prothom Alo were awarded in this contest.

A professional photographer Shahadat Parvez, graduated from Pathshala-the South Asian Institute of Photography. He contributed to many international national newspapers, magazines and periodicals with interesting images. Gypsy Meal is the title of Parvez's photograph. Monirul Alam has been involved with photography since 1994. A commerce graduate, he completed his photography course from Bangladesh Photographic Institute (BPI). He was awarded for the photograph titled Jump .

An exhibition of these 130 photographs will tour major Japanese cities for about one year, beginning April 2006.
