Bangladesh U-19s lose again

Bangladesh suffered their second consecutive defeat in the Afro-Asia Cup Under-19 cricket, when they slumped to an eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka yesterday in Visakha-patnam. Despite a solid start after electing to bat first, Bangladesh were bundled out for 175. Tamim Iqbal, younger brother of national opener Nafees Iqbal, smashed six fours and one six in a blazing 37-ball 42 during an opening stand of 58. His opening partner Mehrab Hossain scored the second highest tally, a patient 37 off 77 deliveries, but this did not prevent Bangladesh from crashing to 126-4 from a comfortable 114-2 inside six overs. After a brief recovery in the middle, the tail collapsed like ninepins when the last half of the batting order was dismissed in the space of 13 runs, with Karuna Nayaka (4-26) and Rajiva Weerasinghe (3-34) wrapping up the essay in 46.5 overs. Unlike the first match, when Bangladesh lost to hosts India by four wickets, the bowlers failed to dominate as Sri Lankan openers D Karuna and Sameera Zoysa's 84-run partnership steered the islanders to 178-2 with 18 overs to spare. Karuna hammered eight fours and three sixes in his 78 off 84 balls, while Zoysa made 43 with five fours and one six. Spinners Sakib Al Hasan and Shohrawardi Shuvo shared the spoils for the final two Lankan wickets. Bangladesh will take on Zimbabwe tomorrow.
