Pickpocket rewarded for tip

Police on Monday rewarded Rawshan Ali, a pickpocket, for the information that helped them arrest the first August 17 bomb blasts suspect in Satkhira.

Rawshan received Tk 10,000 for his role in the arrest of Nasir Uddin, a Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadre, at Islampur in sadar upazila of the district soon after the nationwide blasts.

Munshi Atiqur Rahman, investigation officer (IO) of the case, also gave Rawshan Tk 1,000 while Anisur Rahim, editor of a local daily Satkhira Chitra, gave him a goat.

The Daily Star published a report on Rawshan's role in nabbing the first suspect of the serial blasts.

Rawshan, 45, of village Baliadanga in sadar upazila, reside at Islampur slum with his family. A day-labourer in his early life, he started picking pockets after marriage and continued to do so for the last 20 years.

"No more pick pocketing, this incident has changed my life," Rawshan told this correspondent yesterday. "I shall buy a shallow water pump for irrigation in the paddy fields in the coming season," he added.
