Practice pain for Tigers

Just two days before the first ODI against an in-form home side, the Bangladesh team received a tough wake-up call when they went down by ten wickets against the Sri Lankan Board President's XI in their only practice match at Moratuwa on Sunday.

Habibul Bashar won the toss and must have thought he had a fighting score on the board when the Tigers finished on 235 for eight in 50 overs. However, the Board President's XI openers Avishka Gunawardene and Upal Tharanga had other ideas and thrashed a Bangladesh attack, handicapped by an injury to star paceman Mashrafee bin-Mortuza, by storming to their target in just 36.1 overs.

Left-hander Gunawardene smashed 109 with 16 hits to the fence while his partner's 105 contained nine fours and four sixes and came off 117 balls.

A bad day bowling-wise became even worse when Mortuza went off the field after bowling just one over and played no further part in the match. It was learnt from team sources that Mortuza had complained of pain in the back and was taken off as a precautionary measure. He was expected to be fit before Wednesday's game at the SSC ground in Colombo.

Rajin Saleh, who had opened the innings with Javed Omar, top-scored for the tourists with a sedate 53 (103 balls) while Javed played a typically watchful 32 (57 balls).

Aftab Ahmed (1) was a disappointment but Mohammad Ashraful (37) and captain Bashar (31) contributed valuable runs in the middle.

Bangladesh added 72 runs from last ten overs thanks to two quickfire innings from Mohammad Rafique (30) and wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud who hit two fours and a six in his 15-ball 23.

Left-handed opener Shahriar Nafees Ahmed, middle order batsman Tushar Imran and uncapped left-arm paceman Syed Rasel were rested for the match as they only had a four-day break after returning from England with the A side before arriving in Sri Lanka.

The new ICC rules regarding field restrictions and substitute players were applied in the match and Bangladesh used left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak Raj as their super-sub.
