Top boss of Kuwait-based RIHS leaves in a hurry

A top official of the Kuwait-based NGO Revival of Islamic Heritage Society (RIHS) accused of funding Islamist militants in Bangladesh has left the country yesterday, cutting short his trip drastically in the wake of August 17 waves of bombing.

Sources said Kuwait citizen Abdul Aziz Khalaf Malullah came to Bangladesh on a one-month visit on August 14 and boarded up at a Banani guesthouse in the city. But he left Dhaka yesterday only seven days into his trip.

An intelligence agency source said the man, also a world leader of Ahle Hadith Andolan, came here with the express mission to ensure continuation of the RIHS activities in the country. But he failed to manage a positive response from the government.

An top intelligence official said during his visit Malullah held meetings with officials of the Kuwaiti embassy, Bureau of NGO Affairs, religious affairs ministry, home ministry and Middle East-based Islamic NGOs.

"He was embarrassed by the answer when he asked government officials why five RIHS officials had been expelled recently," the official said seeking anonymity. He was told that the five had been residing and working in Bangladesh illegally and assisting Islamist militants.

He was also told that there are proves of the RIHS clearly violating the Foreign Donation Regulation (FDR) Act 1978 and getting involved in activities contrary to Bangladesh's interest.

Meanwhile, a Special Branch (SB) report has revealed that Ahale Hadith leader and Rajshahi University Arabic teacher Asadullah al Galib deposited a Tk 27 lakh RIHS allocation for orphanages to Jihadi fund.

A top SB official said the investigation report was submitted to the SB chief on Saturday, which he in turn will submit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs soon.

The report said Galib, now in prison, still maintains contact with the RIHS and RIHS people are often found to meet him.

Sources said the NGO bureau issued a warning to the RIHS not to provide money to any individual but only to projects and if it violates the order it will be evicted from the country.
