Bomb blasts at Akhaura shrine kill 1, injure 20

A series of bomb blasts killed one and injured 20, some of them critically, during an urs at a shrine in Akhaura last night.The first bomb blasted at the main gate of Hazrat Shah Syed Ahammad Gechu Daraj alias Shah Pir Kollah Shahid shrine at Kharampur village at 11:36pm, said Mejbah Uddin, Akhaura upazila nirbahi officer (UNO). The remaining eight bombs exploded some five to seven yards away from the gate one after another. An unexploded bomb was also found after the blasts. The injured were taken to upazila health complex. The critically injured were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. One of them died soon after admission to the hospital. The urs began on Wednesday and was supposed to continue for a week. Assistant Superintendent (Circle) of Nabinagar, Officer-in-Charge of Akhaura Police Station and another police official were present at the shrine during the blast. Meanwhile, three people were killed and at least 70 injured including British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury in a powerful bomb blast at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet on 21 May last year. Another blast rocked the same shrine leaving two killed and 37 injured on January 12 last year. Seven people were killed and 20 others injured in another blast at a fair in a shrine on January 12, 2003. Four were killed in another blast at Alal Pak Darbarsharif ar Faridpur in 1999.
