BD A's Tour Match
Benning gives Surrey control

James Benning struck a swashbuckling hundred as Surrey recovered from a bumpy start to wrest control against Bangladesh A on the opening day of their three-day match at The Oval in London yesterday.

Benning, a former England Under 19 cap, hammered 124 off 125 balls after Syed Russel and Shahadat Hossain struck early for the visitors.

The home side declared their first innings at 336-5 after 74 overs.

Young right-arm paceman Russel celebrated his maiden call up in the senior team by dismissing opener Newman for 8 before his new-ball partner Shahadat Hossain got rid of the biggest name in the Surrey team and England Test discard March Butcher (5).

But coming into bat at number four with his side limping 25-2, Benning led a spectacular recovery operation with other opener Clinton. The pair added 169 runs for the third wicket.

Clinton scored 56 but Benning was not ready to resign before completing his second first-class ton. The right-hander clubbed 19 fours and three massive sixes before being run out.

Left-arm spinner Enamul Haque took two wickets amidst the Benning thunder. But the home side continued to prosper with former England leg spinner Ian Salisbury (59) and wicketkeeper Hood (57) adding 105 runs for the unbroken sixth

wicket.
