Promising photographs and paintings

Hamiduzzaman Khan , speaking about Aminul Haque Shanto's exhibition at the Zainul Gallery, says, " His photographs are truly beautiful. A self- taught painter, with basic training in photography, he does art criticism too. His aesthetic sense in his photographic compositions are admirable in most of his work. His drawings and paintings are similarly thought-provoking. Moinuddin Khalid too had fine words for him. One hopes that he will continue with his experiments."

Shanto says, " In my photographs I've brought in the play of light and shadow. The backdrops of the pictures bring in both the city and the village. My focus has usually been close-up shots. The subjects have been varied. I've brought in pastels, paints and pen lines in my other works and they tend to be semi abstract or symbolic as well as realistic at times . I have tried to experiment with form and colour."

In "Candle-dance" there is the twirling , gliding line of the shifting candle light flame. The women in red have their faces, hands and bodies rigid in the pose. The red saris of the dancers are a contrast to the dark backdrop of green, brown and black. One sees the play of light and shade on the face of Negroid sculpture in the next picture "Magic of light and shade". The next photo, "Expression" brings a seated young woman, with folded hands, smiling at the lens. Her bright clothes stand out against the blurred background.

"Dance of the butterfly" shows a yellow and black winged insect flitting from one leaf to another. In "Beauty" one comes across a spray of yellow and red flowers seen against the background of Shangshad Bhaban. The picture is in browns and greens. "Fallen" focuses on a leaf that has dropped on the cement footpath. In another photograph is a lotus bud , found among a spread of fleshy green leaves in an expanse of brown water. A fence is seen in "Desire for freedom" and here a metal fence is seen in the symbolic sense of a yearning for escape and peace. "Whirling wings" has a swan circling in water in a restive mood. "Sunset" depicts the evening in Kolkata with a hanging bridge in the distance, and some leaves in the front.

"I indulge in photography as I like to capture the beauty of the moments I come across from time to time. When I sketch, I think I have more freedom to do whatever I like with the subject. I can't express everything within me in the visual form and so I go in for writing too. There is beauty in the soul of most things and this is what I want to reach out to,' says Shanto.

While photographing Shanto has had many experiences as when he met the children in the village area who were intrigued by his camera. "These children are bound to be more affectionate than the street urchins in the city who are blasé with photographers.

Once I landed into a scene of underground workers who had lit a huge fire to cover up a scene of crime. That was a nerve racking experience and fortunately don't occur every day, says Shanto. This is his first solo attempt.
