Gloucestershire let off the hook

Bangladesh A pacemen had Gloucestershire napping but the county side's last three wickets added exactly 160 as they recovered from a precarious 72 for seven to 232 all out shortly after tea on day one of their three-day match in Bristol yesterday.Shortly before close, the tourists were experiencing batting trouble of their own and had slumped to 41 for three after 11 overs. The batsmen dismissed were openers Nafees Iqbal (4), Shahriar Nafees (5) and Nazim-uddin (5). Tushar Imran was batting on 13while Alok Kapali was on 9. Earlier, the day couldn't have started better for Shahriar Nafees' men after the skipper had won the toss and put the home team in. His new ball duo Syed Russel and Shahadat Hossain Rajib immediately breathed fire. Shahadat, who has had a nightmarish last couple of months in England starting from his debut Test at Lord's and then the clubbing at the hands of British Universities batsmen in the A side's tour opener on Monday, struck the first blow by bowling Kadeer Ali without a run on the board. Left-arm paceman Russel then removed veteran Philip Weston and James Pearson to leave Glouces-tershire on 49 for three. That became 49 for four as first change Talha Jubair accounted for Alex Gidman. Shahadat and Jubair shared two more wickets before lunch and it appeared the end was near. However Stephen Snell, a 22 year-old, had other ideas and made his first class debut an occasion to remember by blasting an unbeaten 83 (123 balls; 11x4, 3x6). Coming in at number seven, the wicketkeeper shared two outstanding stands with Jonathan Averis (33) and England paceman Jon Lewis (47). Snell's eighth wicket partnership of 98 with Averis ended when medium pacer Mushfiqur Rahman had him caught (160/8). But Lewis continued to frustrate Bangladesh A before his run-a-ball innings was finally cut short by Jubair (225/9). Left-arm spinner Enamul Haque (Jr.) was the only bowler not to get a wicket.
