New TV play Trishna on Misir Ali

Fascinating character Misir Ali, a unique creation of celebrated author Humayun Ahmed, will be seen in a new TV play Trishna today on ATN Bangla on the occasion of the ninth founding anniversary of the channel. A professor of psychology, Misir Ali is not a psychiatric consultant. However, because of his special interest in paranormal activities, people suffering from such problems come to him in search of satisfactory solutions. Directed by the author himself, the play features Jayanto Chattapadhyay as Misir Ali. The other artistes are Mahfuz Ahmed, Monalisa, Swadhin Khasru and child artiste Shantuma.

The story line of Trishna is as follows: A young but devastated man comes to see Misir Ali and asks for a favour. Apparently, every night, the man wakes up in a cold sweat and discovers a little girl sitting on his bed. The girl asks for a glass of water. The terrified man realises that the girl does not belong to the real world as she disappears whenever he wants to talk to her. Pushed into a corner, the man asks Misir Ali to save him from this predicament. Misir Ali agrees to unfold the mystery. However, an uncomfortable truth is revealed at the end of the play.

The shooting of the play was completed last Tuesday at Nuhash Palli, the shooting spot established by Humayun Ahmed. Jayanto Chattapadhyay plays Misir Ali for the first time. Earlier Abul Hayat had enacted the role.

According to Jayanto, " I could not do justice to the character as I never read any of the stories featuring Misir Ali. Moreover, I could not empathise with the character as we had very limited time. This is a new story written exclusively for the play. More precisely, the play was a result of an instant script that Humayun developed on the set of Nuhash Palli."

Jayanto had a grouse. "Rain and thunder were obstacles in the shooting. Moreover it was the first time that I played this role." However, he added, "Director Humayun was appreciative of my performance which inspired me.'
