Kibria Killing
'Remove Habiganj DC for fair probe'

Thousands of people lined up on a road from the city's Uttara area to Tongi Bridge hand in hand yesterday, demanding the trial of the killers of slain former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria. They also demanded immediate removal of the deputy commissioner of Habiganj, where Kibria was killed in a grenade attack, alleging that he is creating obstacles to the probe into the murder case. The hour-long protest programme was arranged under the 'Blue for Peace' programme initiated by Asma Kibria, widow of slain former finance minister. Speaking at the programme, Dr Reza Kibria, son of Shah ASM Kibria, expressed his grave concern that the Habiganj DC, who has failed to provide security to Kibria, has not been withdrawn as yet. A fair investigation into the killing is not possible until the government withdraws him, he added. He also said the government did not take any effective step to track down the mastermind of the murder due to vested interest. "We will continue our peaceful protest programme until we get justice," said Asma Kibria. Similar programmes will also be arranged in different districts, she said, adding that the next programme will be held in Netrakona in the first week of August. Criticising the BNP-led four-party alliances, Asma said the government is ignoring the issue despite widespread protests across the country. Kibria, also an Awami League lawmaker, was killed in a grenade attack at Boiddyerbazar in Habiganj on January 27.
