200 killed by law enforcers in 5 months

Two hundred people were killed by law enforcement agencies across the country from January to June this year, a report of Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) said yesterday. Repression by law enforcers in the country has increased more than three times compared with the first five months of last year, BIHR officials said referring to a research on the basis of reports published in 10 national dailies. Law enforcement agencies assaulted 1662 people in this time throughout the country, the BIHR report observed. Besides, various crimes have increased in the country. One hundred and twelve leaders, workers and supporters of different political parties were killed during the period. Three journalists were also killed during this period. Meanwhile, BIHR will today observe International Day for the Oppressed declared by the United Nations. BIHR Chairman Justice KM Sobhan has expressed deep concern over the present human rights situation in Bangladesh.
