Emerging Talent
Kabir Babu to steer The New Shobuj Opera soon

Acclaimed director Mamunur Rashid has parted ways with his Jatra-based mega-serial The New Shobuj Opera. The young director Kabir Babu will fill in for him from next month.Commenting on the change at the helm, Babu said, "Mamunur Rashid could not devote adequate time for the serial. As a result, the assistant director of the play Tareq had to take on extra pressure. That explains why Mamunur Rashid asked me to take over the responsibility." Babu began his career as an assistant. He has worked with Humayun Faridee, Abul Hayat, Arun Chowdhury and others in crafting TV plays. He said, "In Bangladesh, there is no proper institution which provides training particularly on direction of TV plays. The only means of getting the know how seems to be working as assistants of renowned directors." Over the years Babu emerged as a director of a few single-episode plays for BTV. He has made one mega-serial--Alo Chhaya, which is being aired on ATN Bangla. What problems does a newcomer face in the field? To quote him, "The introduction of package progra-mmes has given an opportunity to many to prove their talent in the electronic media. However, it is difficult for the new directors to get producers. The producers trust the renowned directors. “It's ironical though that many of these directors are not even on the sets while shooting and the assistants have to take the load." Besides directing TV plays, Babu is keen on making films. He said, "At present, I am working as the assistant of filmmaker Didarul Alam Badal in making the movie Na Bolona." Commenting on his upcoming projects, Babu says, "I am directing two single-episode TV plays -- one written by Azad Abul Kalam and the other by M Sakhawat. Moreover, I plan to direct a mega-serial Kathkoilar Chhobi, written by Selina Hossain. It is based on life in tea-gardens."
