JRC talks: Atrai issue remains unresolved
A Correspondent, Dinajpur
A survey team of the Indo-Bangladesh Joint River Commission (JRC) at a meeting here on Saturday discussed border demarcation along the Atrai, a common river. The four-hour meeting at Mohanpur Madrasa ground was held in a cordial atmosphere but a decision to allow the Bangaldesh Water Development Board (WDB) construct revetments on the Atrai to check erosion was not taken, meeting sources said. A decision may be taken at the JRC Standing Committee meeting to be held in Kolkata today. Earlier, the JRC team, joined by officials of Dinajpur district administration and of BDR and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) visited the border area from boundary pillar no. 307/1R to 307/3R on Atrai river bank to settle the issue of revetment construction by WDB. The sources said Bangladesh's stand for construction of revetments along the riverbank in its territory was well received by the Indian side. The WDB earlier made several attempts to construct revetments but the move was abandoned due to resistance by Indian Border Security Force (BSF). This also created tension in the border. "We are hopeful of a good result at the Kolkata meeting", a source said. Prior to visiting the Atrai river bank, the team surveyed Gilabari and Paladanga border areas along the Mohananda river bank in Chapainawabganj district, where WDB's attempts to construct revetments were also resisted by BSF. The Bangladesh team in the JRC was led by Tauhidul Anwar Khan. He was assisted by WDB Chief Engineer in Rangpur zone Sayed Ahmed, Dinajpur WDB Superintending Engineer Khondker Muhammad Shahidullah, Executive Engineer Fazlur Rahman, Commanding Officer of 15 BDR Battalion in Phulbari Lt Col. Nurul Islam and Dinajpur Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rev) Abu Taleb. The Indian side was led by ML Goyal. He was assisted by Indian High Commission official in Dhaka Gaddam Dharmendra, Additional Director General of BSF (South) SK Mira, Executive Engineer of West Bengal Water Resources Department SK Biswas, Rabi Sankar, A Chakroborty and Commandant of 200 BSF Battalion.
