Agitation unto justice
Vows Kibria family
Staff Correspondent
The family of slain Shah AMS Kibria yesterday vowed to continue with peaceful programmes and, if need be, announce fresh ones until the killers and mastermind of the murder are brought to justice."We'll not let the issue die before our demand for arrest and punishment of the culprits is met," Asma Kibria, wife of the slain former finance minister and leading diplomat, said yesterday. She was talking to The Daily Star after a 'Blue for Peace' silent demonstration in Dhanmondi in the capital. Asma said the recently-launched 'Janatar Dabipatra' (a letter writing campaign) has been extended for two months until July following response from people across the country. She has asked all to write letters to the prime minister through her demanding a fair trial of Kibria killing. Fresh programmes might be announced on completion of the current campaign besides continuing with the 'Blue for Peace'. "It's for sure, our programmes will be peaceful and devoid of violent acts," Asma said. About 100 people from different walks of life formed a human chain in front of the slain diplomat's house at Jigatola in the afternoon. Besides family members of Kibria, Awami League adherents, university teachers and students, cultural activists and commoners took part in the demonstration, many in blue dress -- females in blue saris and males in blue shirts and T-shirts. The demonstrators including Dhaka University Teachers' Association President Arefin Siddique, AL leader Asim Kumar Ukil and General Secretary of the AL's women front Fazilatunnesa Indira stood by the street for half an hour braving rain. Asma and her relatives were carrying a banner that read: "No Bloodletting, No Killing, We Want a Peaceful Bangladesh". Many of the demonstrators carried placards inscribed with slogans including 'Nation wants neutral probe into Kibria killing' and 'No More Alliance Rule, No More Grenade Attacks'. Some demonstrators were carrying small blue flags symbolising peace. "Our peaceful protests will one day get such strength and spread across the country in such manner that no-one can ignore it. We'll then succeed in ensuring a secured life for our next generations," Asma said. The next 'Blue for Peace' demonstration will be held at Narayanganj Shaheed Minar on May 12. Sammilita Ainjibi Parishad of the district will organise the programme to be held in the afternoon. The demonstrators will stage a token hunger strike and Asma will break it by providing water to them. Talking to The Daily Star, Asma expressed no-trust in the ongoing government probe into Kibria's killing, describing it as an eyewash. "After showing Qaiyum as the prime accused in the charge-sheet, the government investigators are keeping their hands off the mastermind. They even didn't record Qaiyum's confessional statement under section 164 (of the Code of Criminal Procedure)." "We know we can't hope they'll nab the real culprits. That's why we had demanded investigation by the FBI. The president, the prime minister and the speaker haven't sent letter of condolence on my husband's death, though it's a normal courtesy," she added.
