Hiking at Habiganj forest

Participants at a trail hiking at Satchuri Reserved Forest in Habiganj on Sunday stressed on the need for creating more job opportunities for local people with a view to stopping illegal felling of trees in the forest. They told this at a post-hike discussion on forest conservation by developing a collaborative management process with the Forest Department, says a press release. Md Emdadul Haque, Deputy Commissioner of Habiganj took part in the programme as chief guest while it was attended by Union Parishad (UP) chairmen, members, teachers, doctors, journalists, representatives of civil society, police and BDR. The hikers walked in dense forest enjoying the chirping of birds and sounds of Hoolock Gibbons. A few of threatened Hoolock Gibbons were found in the protected forest area. Nishorgo Support Project organised the programme to mobilise local stakeholders to the collective effort. The Forest Department's Protected Area (National park, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Game Reserve) Management Programme is known as Nishorgo Programme which aims at conserving bio-diversity. The programme is being implemented with USAID's financial support through Nishorgo Support Project. The Divisional Forest Officer of Sylhet Forest Division, Forest Department officers and Nishorgo Support Project members helped them in the hike.
