'Child-sensitive PRSP can reduce poverty'

Only a child-sensitive Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) can unlock the potential for genuine poverty reduction in the country, said the speakers at a workshop yesterday.They said dimensions of childhood poverty, children's right and a transparent monitoring mechanism should be clearly reflected in PRSP draft which is being finalised now by the planing commission. The workshop on 'Creating a child-sensitive PRSP in Bangladesh' was jointly organised by Save the Children UK and Sweden-Denmark at a city hotel. Chaired by Dr Kamal Siddiqui, principal secretary to the prime minister and head of PRSP Steering Committee, the workshop was attended by Dr Quazi Mesbahuddin Ahmed, member of the general economic division, Akhtaruzzaman Khan, joint chief of the planing commission and Prof Kaniz Siddiqui, member of the PRSP drafting committee. David Humphrey, programme director of Save the Children, UK facilitated the workshop where main presentation was made by Save the Children, UK, Sweden-Denmark, Care, CONCERN, NFOWD, Ain O Salish Kendra and Young Power in Social Action. A number of participants from the Unicef, ILO, World Bank, AusAid, Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, BNWLA and Ministry of Women and Children Affairs also took part in the workshop.
