WB okays $200m for post-flood recovery

The World Bank (WB) yesterday approved $200 million package for post-flood recovery assistance programme in the country.

The package has three broad components -- infrastructure rehabilitation, import finance and livelihood restoration, a bank press release said.

Infrastructure rehabilitation programme will focus on rehabilitation of damaged roads, bridges, culverts and municipal infrastructure.

The component will also support the rehabilitation and renovation of primary and secondary schools in a way that the schools can also be used as disaster shelters for the affected local communities.

In addition, the bank will also support rehabilitation of 31 flood-affected fish farms under the Department of Fisheries.

Import finance will finance eligible imports which were urgently needed by the public and private sectors for reconstruction and rehabilitation following the floods.

The component of livelihood restoration will provide credits to four lakh poor households affected by floods as well as those affected by Monga in the northern districts.

Bangladesh experienced devastating floods between July to September last year. Nearly 38 per cent of the country was inundated and total impact of floods was estimated to be about 4 per cent of GDP.

This project addresses the short to medium-term needs following the devastating 2004 floods, the press release said.

The post-flood recovery assistance programme is based on the damage and needs assessment study which was conducted jointly by the Asian Development Bank and the WB.
