'Declare Feb 14 Sundarbans Day'

Speakers at a discussion yesterday called upon the government to declare February 14 Sundarbans Day. They also urged the government to protect the bio-diversity and wildlife of the Sundarbans. The discussion was organised by the Sundarbans Day Udjapan Committee at Satkhira sadar upazila parishad auditorium with its Convenor Principal Asit Kumar Majumdar in the chair. Taking part in the discussion as chief guest, former minister Dr Aftabuzzaman said Bangladesh is blessed with a unique heritage of the Sundarbans, the biggest mangrove forest in the world. A unique ecosystem including various types of animals, birds, fishes and insects is found in the forest which is the only habitat of the Royal Bengal Tiger, he added. The speakers said the Sundar-bans, which has been protecting the South-Western region of the country from natural calamities, is now on the verge of extinction. Prof Mohammad Ali, Kamrul Islam Farooq, Mariam Mannan and Madhab Chandra Dutta also spoke. Mentionable, the Sundarbans Day is being observed here by different socio-cultural organisations for the last five years.
