200 hurt at garment factories

At least 200 garment workers were injured, ten of them seriously, when they were trampled while fleeing fire at three garment factories at Siddhirganj yesterday.

Demra fire service sources said the panic ensured as a fire broke out at a re-rolling mill, Iqbal Group of Industries, at 11:30am.

The re-rolling mill is adjacent to Krishnachura Fashion Ltd, Nur Knitwear and AB Sweater Ltd.

The workers of the three factories became frightened when they saw the smoke billowing out of a tin-roofed godown. They started rushing out of the factories through narrow stairs and many of them were trampled under the feet of one another, sustaining injuries.

Most of the injured workers were women. Ten of the injured were admitted to Simrail Shuvechha Clinic while the rest to other clinics.

The fire was extinguished by local people before the arrival of the firefighters.
