Contractor shot dead

Extortionists gunned down a contractor at Sabujbagh in the capital yesterday.

The victim Abdus Sattar, 40, used to supply rations to the army in Rangamati.

A gang of about seven entered the first floor of his house at Dakkhingaon in Sabujbagh at 3:00pm and holding a gun pointing at the head of his 13-year-old son Mehedi, they asked Sattar to give them Tk 5 lakh which they had demanded earlier, sources said.

As he refused, they shot at him.

Receiving three bullets in the chest and leg, Sattar fell to the ground. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead.

Hearing gunshots, locals chased the gang, held three of them and beat them severely.

Later they handed them over to the police.

Police sent two arrestees--Swadhin, 20, and Shyamal, 28, -- to DMCH for treatment, said duty officer of Shabujbagh Police Station.

Shyamal succumbed to his injuries at about 5:30pm, while Swadhin's condition was stated to be critical.
