3 die in Kuwait as militants, troops clash
AFP, Kuwait City
A policeman, a suspected militant and a Bahraini civilian were killed in a gunbattle yesterday near Kuwait City, the third such heavy clash in the emirate this month, the interior ministry said. One militant and four security men were wounded in the firefight, which broke out in the Salmiya district, some 20km east of the capital, after police cordoned off an area in search of wanted militants. A third suspect was arrested by security forces who stormed a building where "terrorists" were hiding and a heavy exchange of gunfire took place, the ministry said in a statement. "Security men this morning stormed an apartment building on Blajat street in Salmiya where a number of terrorists were hiding where an exchange of fire took place," it said. An AFP correspondent heard grenades and heavy gunfire throughout the hour-long exchange. Two helicopters hovered above the area, with access made off limits by a massive police presence and armoured vehicles.
