15 cops closed for highway toll collection

Fifteen Chuadanga traffic police including two sergeants were closed on Sunday for their alleged involvement in illegal highway toll collections.

A departmental investigation is now underway to probe the matter.

According to a police source, an on-duty highway police team led by sergeants Hemayat Hossain and Golam Jakaria stopped seven Dhaka bound cattle trucks coming from the Alamadnaga upazila of the district on the Kushtia-Chuadanga highway, near to sadar police station, at about 9:00pm on Friday. The police realised Tk 1,000 from each truck.

The next day the owners of the cattle filed an allegation with the police superintendent of Chuadanga. District police authorities subsequently closed all the involved police from the police line.

The police personnel are sergeants Hemayat Hossain and Golam Jakaria, havildars Nikhil Chandra Kar and Rakibul Islam and constables Nabir Uddin, Abdul Wadud, Aiyub Ali, Jahidul Islam, Nawab Ali, Matiar Rahman, Hafizur Rahman, Ikman Ali, Fakrul Alam, Abdur Rashid and Mizanur Rahman.

When contacted the police superintendent of Chuadanga, Dr Aftab Ahamed, told The Daily Star that all would be punished if the probe finds them guilty.
